The US Secretary of State and some Latin American countries have been concerned about the recent increase on military expenditures that has been made by Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia and Venezuela.

DISC Chair has obtained information about the recent increase on South American military expenditures; Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and Bolivia have raised their military budget with the purpose of acquiring sofisticated weaponry. These countries argued that they raised their military expenditures in order to preserve their national security. However, the increase of the military capabilities of a country increases the political tension with its neighbours and could cause a further confrontations.

The members of Disarmament and International Security Committee have the duty to perform negotiations with both, suppliers and buyers of weaponry in order to diminish the presence of offensive armaments in the South American region.

DISC strongly suggests to remain seized of this matter.
